Garage Door Balance

To check the safety of the garage door balance, all you need to do is turn the garage door opener off and disconnect it so that the door will open manually. Lift the door up about halfway. Let go of the door. If the door moves, or if it closes, then the door isn’t properly balanced, and it could be a safety hazard. Be careful when letting the door go and make sure there is nothing beneath it in case it closes.

Mechanical Reverse Feature

This is the feature that ensures that the door won’t close on anything that is below the door. To test the safety of this operation, just open the garage door using the opener. Place a block of wood directly underneath the door on the ground. Close the garage door. The sensor should make the doorstop as soon as it senses the piece of wood. If the door doesn’t stop and it hits the wood call a professional immediately and don’t use the garage door until it’s been professionally fixed.

Door Photocell

To see if the door photocell is working properly first, you need to locate the two “eyes” or photo sensors that are located on the base of the garage door. If they are in proper alignment, they should light up. If they don’t light up, you may need to adjust them. Once you’re sure they’re aligned, turn the door on. As it opens, wave something in the path of the two sensors. They should immediately reverse. If they don’t, then you need to call a professional right away.
